Wakefield

Wakefield is a city and metropolitan district (from 2011 built-up area) located in the southern portion of West Yorkshire metropolitan county, the historic county of Yorkshire.

The metropolitan borough extends from the area of former coal mining and wool manufacturing in the Pennine Foothills to the plains beyond the confluence between the Rivers Aire at Castleford. The coal mining industry declined in the 20th century and the last mine near Pontefract, in the eastern portion of the borough closed in 2002. The eastern part of the borough, with its fertile limestone, is home to fine mansions, set in beautiful parkland. Bretton Woolley Halls and Nostell Priory are all examples. However, the area is scarred by mining subsidence, and there are also spoil heaps.
